Ultra Marathon Raises Money for St Leonards Hospice in York 1

Ultra Marathon Blog – Part 1

The Ultra Challenge

Ultra [noun]…’a running event longer than a marathon (26.219 miles or 42.195km)’

It’s not every day you decide to enter an ‘Ultra’.  In November last year, I made a calculated and dedicated decision to enter my first Ultra for two main reasons.

The first was to say thank you to a local charity and the second, to accomplish a personal goal.

History

In 2017, my father-in-law was suddenly taken ill, and although surviving major surgery in previous years, we sadly lost him in July of that year.  The sad news didn’t end there. My mother-in-law was diagnosed with cancer in October of the same year.  As her condition was terminal she was admitted to St Leonards Hospice in York where she received dedicated care and we received tremendous support.  She quietly passed away in January 2018.

I wish, therefore, to say thank you to St Leonards for their kindness and devotion by running an Ultra and raising as much money as possible to support such a worthwhile and caring charity.

As I enjoy a challenge; a real challenge, albeit physical or mental, on the 15th June 2019 I will be relying on the pure determination to run 111km (69 miles) from Carlisle to Newcastle, hopefully completing the course within one day and before the sun sets!

Over the next 6 months, I will write a regular blog of my training and keep you up-to-date with how the fundraising is going.  Our company, Oak By Design, will be sponsoring me for the entrance fees, travelling expenses and equipment needed to complete the training and actual event.

Donation

Setting a goal for the amount I want to raise for St Leonards was a difficult decision; too low and it would easily be achievable, too high and it may seem unrealistic.  Therefore, I will be leaving the decision to you; the sponsor.  St Leonards of York is a fantastic charity and I would urge all business owners, suppliers, customers, friends and family to help in any form they can.
