Oak Flooring, Stairs and Trusses!
Jane Grove came to see Oak By Design after her builder, Chris Smith, recommended them. Chris had recently installed an oak verandah for a client outside Harrogate and he had been impressed with the quality of it.
Jane and her husband were in the process of extending their stone built, detached, modern home near Harrogate. They were joining their double garage to the main house and forming more space on 2 floors.
The new space, adjacent to the existing kitchen, had a vaulted ceiling and oak was required to create a feature. To save space, an oak spiral staircase leads to the light-filled mezzanine, courtesy of the full-length glazed panel and roof. It is finished off with oak spindles to the balustrade.
Oak flooring on both floors is from Oak by Designs Pelgrim range. This engineered oak flooring has been designed to give the aged appearance, complete with indentations and deep smoked colour. It also has the stability and hard wearing (Osmo Polyx Oil) finish of a modern floor.
The Groves chose wider boards at 225mm for the larger ground floor area and 190mm wide boards for the landing area. Both were in Smoked Natural colour – very popular due to its warm, natural tones. The oak flooring is also compatible with underfloor heating.
In the roof space are 3 oak trusses complete with matching oak purlins, hips and valleys. These are a cosmetic addition to the main roof as it is self-supporting. All the oak is planed, sanded and finished in a clear ‘raw’ oil to give a natural unfinished appearance. Oak by Design also supplied the double-sided door at the top of the landing and over-clad a blank fire checked door that leads to the garage.
The extension has created a light-filled area with character features in the stone walls, staircase, floors and doors whilst retaining the homes contemporary feel.
