Introduction

The Period Property Needed Something
The authentic colour, high-end engineered floor was perfect!

When Alison Flint was extensively renovating her beautiful Edwardian home in Harrogate, she went to Oak By Design looking for herringbone oak flooring.  It had to be engineered oak to fit over the underfloor heating she had just had installed on the ground floor of her property.

Oak By Design, at this time, had just started to provide an herringbone oak floor. This delighted Alison as she had struggled to find what she wanted anywhere else.

After taking a large sample panel home for a few days, she looked at it in the various rooms at various times of the day.  A decision was made; she chose Smoked Tobacco, a lovely rich colour which was well suited to the period property.

Process

Richard visited the Flints home and calculated the amount of oak flooring required. He needed to allow for a double border around the edges of each room. Alison wanted a herringbone oak floor fitting in the Cinema Room, Sitting Room, Dining Room and Hallway of the ground floor. It was to provide a clean, fluid finish throughout. To form a neat finish around the edges of the rooms, a double row of 175mm straight boards created a tidy border.

The fitter installed the flooring into the bay windows and up against the fabulous period panelling in the rooms providing a very cohesive look. Provisions for electrical sockets within the flooring were also made.

Oak By Design made three matching oak steps and nosing’s from the hallway to the kitchen. To create the same colour as the flooring they fumed the oak at their Tockwith workshop and finished this with a Tobacco stain. This created a uniform finish throughout.

Outcome

Alsion said…”we were delighted with floor and the authentic colour, high-end engineered floor was perfect!”

The specifications are that each stave (piece of wood) used was 700mm long and 175mm wide. The boards are all pre-finished, ensuring a quicker fitting time unlike unfinished boards. However, laying a herringbone oak floor is no mean feat!

The finish used on the boards is Osmo Polyx Oil, which provides a natural, hardwearing finish. This exclusive herringbone oak flooring is also available in different colours and textures.
