Testimonial

"We visited Oak By Design showroom in Harrogate early December and were immediately impressed by the selection available and quality of the oak workmanship.

The attention and time given to us in the showroom for such a relatively small order was very much appreciated and we had no hesitation in placing our order.

The date given to us for completion was met and the result was exactly what we required.

We are very pleased with the result and would have no hesitation in recommending Oak By Design to any potential customer."

Internal Oak Doors

We offer 3 types of internal door.

  1. Planked Style
  2. Double Boarded
  3. Engineered

Planked Style

The basic plank style door is called a ledged only door.  These are made to measure and are manufactured from kiln dried European Oak.

The upright planks measure 165mm wide and are 20mm thick whilst the ledges are 165mm tall and 27mm thick.

Each door is assembled with screws and matching oak pellets ensuring a strong and stable door.  We do not glue the boards and each door is sanded by hand ready for finishing on site.

We are able to make planked doors of all sizes and can then offer a choice of personal touches.

1. Additional Braces or a 4th Ledge

You may alter the style of the door by adding either 2 diagonal braces or a 4th ledge.  These additions are purely cosmetic as the standard ledged only door is made as a structural door.

If you require additional braces, we need more information on your doors opening direction.  See technical.

2. Aged and Distressed

The same oak door can be distressed to create a more aged appearance as pictured right.

This example shows each upright plank curved, wire brushed and coloured and has been oiled and waxed creating a patina.

We need additional information when ordering a plank door as not all openings/frames can accommodate these types of oak doors.

You need to consider:

  1. Opening Direction
  2. Left or Right Hung
  3. Width of Opening
  4. Hinges and Ironmongery
  5. Existing Frames

For these and other guidelines, please visit read our technical section on planked oak doors (technical).

As we make your entire oak door 'in house', we can also produce planked doors with glass apertures, odd sizes from templates, matching pairs and stable doors.

Double Boarded

This Rolls Royce of a door is again, made to measure, and offers the benefits of seeing the front of a planked door from both sides.

We double board the door producing a substantial 50mm thick internal oak door that allows you to use conventional butt hinges and apply any ironmongery you wish.

An allowance is needed for the frame/lining to which the door will be within, as a 50mm rebate is needed and not the standard 30/35mm ones you get from timber merchants or other suppliers.

Colour, texture and different finishes can be applied to the door to create an individual look.

Engineered

An engineered door is machine made and is only available in standard sizes, for example 1981mm x 762mm (6'6" x 2'6").

These doors are made from American White Oak and differ in colour and grain from the rest of the oak products we produce.

Examples of an engineered door would be 4 and 6 panelled, full glazed and fire check alternatives.

There are dozens of designs and examples are given here.
